How to Safely Connect Jumper Cables to a Lead Acid Battery

AAA Mid States

Jumper cables are a valuable tool for getting a dead car battery started. However, if they are not used properly, they can also be dangerous.

There is a specific order in which jumper cables should be connected to batteries. This order helps to prevent sparks, which could cause a fire. The following steps should be followed:

  1. Turn off all electrical accessories in both vehicles.
  2. Make sure that the batteries are the same voltage.
  3. Connect the red clamp of the positive cable to the dead battery's positive terminal.
  4. Connect the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal of the working battery.
  5. Connect the black clamp of the negative cable to a grounded metal part of the working vehicle, away from the battery.
  6. Connect the black cable's other end to the dead battery's negative terminal.

Once the cables are connected, start the working vehicle and let it run for a few minutes. Then, try to start the dead vehicle. If the dead vehicle starts, let it run for a few minutes before disconnecting the jumper cables.

It is important to follow these steps carefully to prevent sparks and fire. If you are uncomfortable connecting jumper cables, calling AAA Roadside Assistance service is best. Disconnect the cables in the reverse order that they were connected, be careful not to touch the clamps together.
